Upon Ponderous Wings

It crouches on the searing ground,
Waiting for its preordained moment,
Convulsively swallowing a quarter of its mass,
In preparation for its journey.

As it takes on its final few pounds,
Now fully gorged and stuffed to the gills,
It ponderously moves its bulk out into the open,
Checking over its self one last time.

The way is clear,
The cloudless sky beckons.
With a piercing roar,
It runs down the baked land.

As it screeches out its defiance of the ground bound,
It lifts its massive form into the sky,
Floating almost daintily on spread wings,
And quickly heads for the horizon.

Struggling ever higher,
The monstrous thing finally achieves altitude.
"Bong… You may now remove your seatbelts."
"The stewardess' will be bringing a snack and drinks around…"
